Civil Air Patrol Pegasus Squadron is dual chartered as Venture Crew 351
in accordance with CAPR 52-16, Cadet Programs Management, Chapter 6.
CAP and Venturing and Aviation
Explorer divisions of the Boy Scouts of America have much in common. CAP encourages dual membership in both CAP and BSA as either an Aviation Exploring Post or Venturing Crew, with CAP being the chartered partner. By being the chartered partner, CAP is the basis for the union; therefore, members first belong to CAP. The existing CAP structure does not change and all members will conform to CAP standards and wear the CAP uniform.

Venture Crew 351 Adult Leaders,

New BSA regulations make youth protection training mandatory for all adult leaders (see email below). Previous BSA regulations only required there to be at least two trained adult leaders at any function. The new regulations also require the training to be repeated at least every two years. The CPPT training from CAP does not satisfy this requirement.

You may log onto http://www.myscouting.org to complete this training online. Instructions for loging on to your MyScouting account are in the email below.

Once you are in the system, you may use the following procedure to find the proper training for Venture Crews:
  1. Log on to your MyScouting account
  2. Click on the "E-Learning" link under the "Training" heading on the index on the left side of the page.
  3. Click on the "Venturing Tab"
  4. Click on the "Take Course" link to the right of the "Youth Protection Training - Venturing Version"
  5. Complete the course.
  6. When you have completed the course, the circle to the left of the course should turn green in the "E-Learning Course Management System."
  7. Click on the "View Certificate" link and print out a copy of your certificate. Bring a copy of the certificate to a squadron meeting to put in your file.
While you are here, you may also want to take the "Fast Start: Venturing" course.

Planning and Activities:

Summer 2010          Venture Leadership Skills Course (VLSC). The VLSC is the first step a Venturer encounters on his or her journey toward leadership development. The course has nine leadership modules that begin with an activity and follow with a reflection. Successful completion of this course is a requirement for the Venturing Silver Award and will allow you to wear the “VLSC” patch on your official BSA Class-A Venturing uniform.

Summer 2010          Introduction to backpacking campout. This trip will include two nights of primitive camping and at least two days of hiking with a full backpack. Each scout will gain hands-on experience with common backpacking gear.

8-10 Oct 2010          ScoutJam 2010. This is the Capital Area Council 2010 Jamboree and will be held at the Travis County Expo Center. This year is the 100th anniversary of scouting and attendance at the centennial jamboree is a once in a lifetime event. Venture Crew 351 will be hosting a booth at the Scout Midway and we will be camping at the event both nights (Friday and Saturday). For more information about ScoutJam 2010 go to http://www.scoutjam2010.org/cms/.

Fall 2010                    Wilderness First Aid. This is an intensive weekend course targeted towards mature youth (minimum age of 15) and adult leaders who want to develop their wilderness first aid skills. Learn how to handle emergency medical problems with triage skills that can buy time for help to arrive, and save lives. The course was originally designed by a chapter of the American Red Cross for organizations in the Appalachian Mountains. This terrific course is held at Lost Pines Scout Reservation, involves camping overnight, and is highly recommended for any unit and its leaders before getting involved in wilderness camping. For more information on the Capital Area Council’s offering of this course go to: http://www.bsacac.org/Training/OutdoorClassroomTraining_WildernessFirstAid.php.

6 Nov 2010               Venturing is Happening. This is an all-day event where Venture scouts from across the Capital Area Council get together to socialize and have fun. Activities include boating, climbing, rappelling, all BSA shooting sports (i.e. rifle, muzzle loading, shotgun, pistol, and archery), movies, and games.
